Subsidiary of Donjon Marine Co. Grows Scrap Business By Personal Customer Relationships And Better Facility Efficiency

James Witte,
General Manager

Dover, NJ The scrap-recycling industry was once viewed as a rough-and-tumble, buyer-beware type of business. That over-generalized stereotype has changed in recent years as scrap-recycling operations have become more precise and professional. Now, New Jersey based C&M Metals Recycling wants to take that improved image to the next level.

“Scrap recycling improves the environment by reducing the amount of material going to landfills and reducing the amount of raw material that must be taken out of the earth, so we definitely believe what we do is important,” said James Witte, who runs C&M, as well as the iron and metals division of C&M’s parent company Donjon Marine. “Nonetheless, we’re often viewed as unsavory characters. At C&M Metals Recycling, we want to change that perception. Our goal is to earn a customer’s business, not just by providing the best price - but also by being nice. That means being courteous and professional, and acting at all times with honesty and integrity.”

Witte says by providing such exceptional service, Dover, N.J. based C&M and Staten Island based Donjon Iron and Metal will be able to grow their business “one customer at a time.”

More than a material handler

To help provide such top-of-the-line service, C&M recently bought a SENNEBOGEN 830 material handler from Binder Machinery Company and Sales Representative Jim Gill.

“We use it primarily to off-load trucks, move scrap around the yard and feed our stationary shear, and it’s done a great job,” said Witte. “It makes us more productive by moving material through the plant faster, which in turn allows us to accept more material.”

C&M Metals Recycling uses a SENNEBOGEN 830 to off-load trucks and process materials at its Dover, N.J., scrap yard.

“In addition to handling scrap, we also sometimes use the SENNEBOGEN 830 as a material processor,” Witte added. “For example, we sometimes take in large metal units, such as aluminum office trailers. In the past, we would have had to torch such pieces and it might take weeks to complete. With the SENNEBOGEN 830, I personally watched one of our talented operators rip such an object apart and segregate the scrap in one hour. It was incredible.”

Witte says with that type of productivity and versatility, the SENNEBOGEN 830 has helped C&M more than double its monthly tonnage out of its Dover yard.
