SENNEBOGEN MAKES SATURDAY A BETTER DAY
FOR KANSAS SHREDDING OPERATION
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WICHITA, KS – Saturday is maintenance day at Glickman Metal Recycling. Through a typical Monday to Friday work week, the equipment on the site processes upwards of 2000 tons of shredded vehicles and appliances so, by Saturday, the machines are entitled to a little TLC from the Glickman service crew. According to the yard's operations manager, Richard Caldwell, finding time to keep up with maintenance demands for his shear and the rest of the equipment fleet has become a little easier. That happened when the company's new SENNEBOGEN 825 M scrap handler came into service.

What's the difference?

"Simplicity!" Caldwell says. "The SENNEBOGEN machines are very easy to work with and that is a big thing for us,” he explains. “We’re really pleased with this 825 M and downtime is almost nil - just basic service. And if they do need a repair, they are really easy to work on because of their ground-level access to the major service points.”

For many recyclers, routine service includes tasks such as cleaning out the cooling system and repairing damaged boom cylinders. With the SENNEBOGEN machine, those are two jobs Caldwell no longer worries about on a busy Saturday.

“The reversing fan is a big plus for us. With other cranes, it’s a big job to pull the fans out of the machine and clean the cooling system, then mount it back up again. With SENNEBOGEN’s reversing fan, you just let the cooling system blow itself clean then go back to work. There's little to no downtime at all." Since the clean-out process is so simple, operators can also blow out the cooling system more often to keep the machine running efficiently, cooler and with less wear for the long term.

A simple design innovation in the boom cylinders also saves costly repair jobs for Caldwell. "New operators have a tendency to bottom out the cylinders when they're loading. The cylinders get damaged by the repeated impact so they have to be rebuilt or replaced on a regular basis. But with this machine, SENNEBOGEN puts stops on the boom that prevent the cylinders from bottoming out. So the cylinders last that much longer."

The president of SENNEBOGEN North America, Constantino Lannes, agrees that small engineering details often make a big difference to SENNEBOGEN customers. "It's a matter of understanding how our equipment actually gets used in the field" he says. "All of us at SENNEBOGEN, right from our senior factory management to our area technicians, make a point of getting out of the factory to talk to customers in person, to see what they're doing and to hear about the problems they have. Simple engineering solutions start with simply listening!"

The addition of the new SENNEBOGEN "green machine" at Glickman is part of an ongoing upgrade program that began when the 20-acre facility was purchased by The Yaffe Companies Inc., along with another Wichita operation, in 2002.

The business was founded by Jacob Glickman in 1915 and relocated to its present location during the 70’s. Yaffe, based in Muskogee, OK, has been expanding through the Midwest and recently consolidated its Kansas operations at the Glickman yard.

With the consolidation came a demand for higher production, newer equipment and increased service capabilities. As a member of ISRI (Institute for Scrap Recycling Industries), Caldwell knew of SENNEBOGEN equipment through seminars put on by the organization. Soon after the 825 M machine went to work at the Glickman yard, Yaffe purchased another SENNEBOGEN scrap handler, an 835 M, for its recycling operation in Tulsa, OK.

The Yaffe Companies Incorporated began in 1907 as a full-service regional scrap business in Fort Smith, Arkansas and now operates facilities in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Yaffe and its subsidiaries have emerged in recent years as one of the largest privately owned scrap metal processing operations in the Midwest.
