NEW YARD DEMANDS INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY

TORONTO, ON:
RAM Iron & Metal Inc., located in Toronto, Canada’s largest city has been owned and operated by the Racco family for over 25 years. Emilio, along with his sons, Peter, Andrew and Paul are constantly on the lookout for ways to increase productivity and throughput. While each of the brothers does have specific responsibilities, Peter is quick to point out that “in a business like this, you need to be able to wear many hats and be ready to do any job that needs to be done in the office or in the yard.”

With operator eye level at 19 ft., visibility into the trailers allows the operator to optimize the space and easily load trailers without damaging the sides.

There is not a day at RAM Iron & Metal that the extensive fleet of equipment isn’t pressed to capacity until the last truck rolls out of the yard in the early evening. The experienced crews are working away at sites throughout the yard including, the operation of bailers, shears, trucks and material handlers, to sort, separate and package ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

RAM Iron & Metal has recently relocated to a seven acre site to better accommodate the company’s growth. Peter notes that, “this location has been great in accommodating our expansion but the yard was nearing capacity, meaning we needed to find ways to improve our efficiency in the handling of materials. This is a numbers business and from a productivity standpoint, we need to hit our numbers on a daily basis. This brought us to the decision that we needed to find new machinery to meet the challenges of our growing operation.”

According to Peter, the family had agreed that it was time to look at what was available on the market. They were visited by the representative from Top Lift Equipment, the SENNEBOGEN green line distributor and explained their needs. Top Lift arranged for a demonstration of the SENNEBOGEN 835 M at their site. “We were very impressed with the features of the machine. Top Lift did not have to do a hard sell on us. The factors that went into our decision to buy the 835 M have more than proven themselves here on the job,” said Peter.

Their 835 M runs on 20” solid rubber tires and the four point outriggers set into place within seconds. “This is a huge benefit to us in terms of mobility,” said Andrew. “Being able to get around the site on wheels makes the machine that much more useful to us. Also the rubber tires cause no damage to the paved areas and we have no trouble getting around in the unpaved areas.”

According to David Shea at Top Lift, “many of the machines we sell today are wheeled. Customers like the flexibility of being able to move the machine from job to job especially if they have any distance to travel. And with the stability built into each machine, the need for tracks, for that reason, is no longer there.”

“A huge factor in our decision was the simplicity of serviceability. You need to have a degree in engineering to understand the servicing of so much of the newer equipment used in our industry but that’s not the case with the SENNEBOGEN,” says Peter. “There are no complex computers on the 835 M that cause a full shutdown or expensive service calls to get the machine back up and running. We can diagnose almost any issue with this 835 M and most of the servicing is simple enough for us to do ourselves. In the few times that we have needed the dealer for parts or service, Top Lift has been outstanding, providing same day or next day service on whatever we have needed. Our 835 M now has over 2500 hours of operation and there just has not been any down times or problems to speak of. Both Andy and I feel that it’s just a very dependable workhorse.”

Another truck pulls into place next to RAM Iron’s first SENNEBOGEN machine. Realizing their productivity gains, RAM Iron & Metal has ordered a second.

Andrew is operating the 835 M today. Although not a usual part of his yard foreman responsibilities, he is pressed into service to meet high demand for out bound orders. After completing the loading of a trailer with bailed scrap, he drives the machine to a non-ferrous site of the yard in about a minute or so. A trailer is backed into place and the SENNEBOGEN 835 M, equipped with a grapple, goes right to work. Andrew notes, “the elevating cab on this piece of equipment is beyond compare to anything else on the market.” While the designers made this a great work environment for the operators, the benefits of the unique cab design are enormous. Andrew explains, “by being able to elevate the cab up to 19 feet above ground level, I have the perfect sight line of my work. I can see into the trailers that I am loading and this is a lot safer and more efficient than loading blind like with other equipment. As well, with having a reach of over 54’, it allows us to place ourselves strategically in the centre of the loading area. As a result of the reach and the line of sight combined with the reach, we have virtually no damage to the trailers we are loading and the trailers can be precisely loaded optimizing all available space. This is good for us and them. We ship more, they carry more.”

The quality and performance of the SENNEBOGEN 835 M along with the great support from the distributor, Top Lift, has led to another important decision for RAM Iron & Metal. They have just committed to adding another SENNEBOGEN to their fleet of equipment. “The 835 M has been such a great addition to our operations; it is easy to see how another one would make our yard that much more efficient.” When asked what advice he would have for any scrap yard operator considering the purchase of a SENNEBOGEN 835 M, Peter’s response was; “Simple, buy it!”

SENNEBOGEN has been a leading name in the global materials handling industry for more than 50 years. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, SENNEBOGEN North America offers a complete line of purpose-built machines to suit virtually any heavy lift or “pick and carry” application.
